"The dazzling six-part textures showed an amazing skill and confidence. Perhaps the key to the excellent choral singing was the careful husbanding of resources, so that the tone always remained fresh."

The Seventh

Bach Festival in Bath

Promoted by Elizabeth Bates and the Chantry Singers

The Chantry Singers, under the leadership of Elizabeth Bates, will present their seventh Bach Festival in October 2010, with another outstanding series of events in the World Heritage City of Bath.

Two concerts in the late Gothic splendour of Bath Abbey form the beginning and end of the Festival: The Chantry Singers will perform the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B Minor with Florilegium and the Steinitz Bach Players respectively.

Soloists will be Simon Birchall, Robin Blaze, Catherine Bott, James Gilchrist,

Mhairi Lawson, James Oxley, Julian Podger, Matthew Rose, Henry Waddington

and Clare Wilkinson.

The Academy of Ancient Music perform all six Brandenburg Concertos in the Assembly Rooms as a centrepiece.

There will be two organ recitals on the great Klais organ in the Abbey: the first from Dame Gillian Weir, and the second from David Briggs, whose stunning improvisation on a Bach theme thrilled the last Bach Festival.

Ashley Solomon and Terence Charlston will play together on flute and harpsichord, and Emma Kirkby will sing a chamber concert with the London Baroque. A lute recital of music by Bach and contemporaries will be given by Jakob Lindberg, and
Ruth Waterman plays violin in another keenly anticipated event.  Peter O'Hagan will be giving a piano recital that he has called 'Bach the Cosmopolitan'.

The Classic Buskers make a welcome return with 'more Baching Mad', and there will be a lecture recital by Dr Peter Seymour and a ‘prelude to Bach’ workshop for
choral singers, under the tuition of the distinguished choral conductor, David Hill.
